Goecha La Trek

The Goechala trek in Sikkim is considered one of the most breathtaking trails in India. It takes you through dense forest, rocky trails and scenic landscapes, hidden waterfalls and lakes, to one of the highest peaks in India at Kanchenjunga Base camp. The entire wooden-log route is adorned by an allure of flora such as orchids, rhododendrons, wildflowers, and more. The serene beauty of Samiti Lake is enough to fill your heart with peace. The enchanting views of the mighty Kanchenjunga range and the Singalila range from Dzongri Top are more than enough to give an experience worth remembering.

Itinerary

Yuksom is a quiet and peaceful village nestled in West Sikkim. It can be reached from NJP station in Siliguri by a 5-hour drive, covering 150 km.

  • Yuksom to Sachen: Dis- 8 Km.

The trek commences after acquiring all the permits and passes. A distance of 8 km from Yuksom to Sachen is covered to set up the first camp. The 5-hour journey is an easy hike through Kanchenjunga Park.

An 8 km trek through a dense forest and a rhododendron trail, awaits us on day 2. We cross the picturesque Bakim, a tea point on our route. We also pass through the last inhabited spot, Tsokha campsite, at 9780ft altitude. 

Phedang to Dzongri: 4 kmThis day would be testing your metal as a 4 km steep terrain followed by a gradual descent dominates day 3. As we cross Deorali top at 13450 ft which is the highest point and gradually descend to Dzongri campsite, a hot lunch welcomes us with a scenic view.

  • Visit to Dzongri top & trek to Thansing

The breathtaking sunrise gleaming through the Kanchenjunga range marks the 4th day morning. Afterwards, anenergy-packed breakfast gets us ready for a descent to Kokchurang. Wecross the river Prek Chu to reach Thansing camp. It’s a huge flat land by mt. Kabru,and the route covers 7km.

Thansing to Lamuney : 4 kmThis light, easy day gives our body a much-needed active rest to prepare us for the upcoming summit. It is an easy terrain covering a 4 km walk through a plane valley with river Prek Chu on the left and Mt. Pandim on the right.

Goecha la visit & trek back to KokchurangStarting for the summit before sunrise, we would walk along Mt. Pandim on our right and the stunning beauty of lake Samiti on our left. The aim is to reach viewpoint 1 to catch the sunrise of the Kanchenjunga range and come back to Thansing camp. A delicious breakfast would be our cue to leave for Kokchurang, with a campsite by the river. A total of 12 km is covered on this day.

  • Kokchurang to Bakim: 11km

After a stunning summit and a Riverside stay, the time comes to descend back to Tsokha, and then Bakim. It is an easy 11 km hike following the river Prek Chu and a lush green forest.

  • Bakim to Yuksom: 11 Km

       Returning from the same trail that we took to               ascend, we leave Bakim and the suspension bridge over Prek Chu. We leave behind ourfootprint on the Kanchenjunga National Park and take memories worth cherishing for a lifetime. After 5 hours of walking, we reach Yuksom where a heartening dinner awaits us.

On our 8-day Packaged plan we don’t keep any buffer days. But a buffer day can be added to make the trek easier. Please call us if you want to customize your trek.

How to reach ?

Goecha la trek starts from Yuksom. It is a beautiful village situated in west Sikkim. The nearest Airport is Bagdogra (IXB), and New Jalpaiguri (NJP is the nearest railway station from there. Both NJP and Bagdogra are near Siliguri town. Yuksom is located at 150Km distance from Siliguri Town, which takes a 5 Hrs Journey by road.

How reach Yuksom from Siliguri ?

A shared car is available directly to Yuksom. You can take a shared cab from Siliguri and reach Yuksom in 5.5 hours. It is a 141 km distance from Siliguri to Yuksom via NH10. In case someone doesn't find a seat in a direct Yuksam Shared taxi, a break journey can be done. You have to reach the 'Jorethang' depo first. From 'Jorethang' shared taxi is available to Yuksom. Shared taxis between Siliguri and 'Jorethang' is very frequent.

How to prepare to Goecha La Trel ?

While the Goecha La trek is very beautiful and popular among trekkers, it is also a little challenging. It is considered to be a moderate-level difficult trek. Prepare your body at least 6 weeks earlier. We recommend regular running/cycling/ swimming for those who are not involved in an active lifestyle. If you go to the gym, then try walking on a treadmill on the incline elevated mode. You can also prepare yourself by climbing stairs with some weight, doing squats, training your calves, and doing push-ups and planks to increase your core muscle strength.
